How to Care for a Bespoke Suit: Making Your Investment Last 20 Years
A quality bespoke suit is built to last decades — but only if it is looked after properly. This guide covers storage, pressing, cleaning, and the habits that preserve a suit's life.
A well-made bespoke suit — properly cared for — will last 20 to 30 years. The difference between a suit that ages gracefully and one that falls apart in five years is almost always care, not construction.
The Golden Rule: Rest Your Suit
Wool fibres need 24–48 hours to recover after wearing. Never wear the same suit two days in a row. If you wear suits daily, rotate at least three jackets so each gets adequate recovery time.
Storing Your Suit
- Use a wide, shaped wooden hanger that supports the full shoulder width. Never use a wire hanger.
- Hang in a breathable fabric garment bag — not plastic, which traps moisture.
- Give it space in your wardrobe. Compressed fabric develops set creases.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
After Each Wear
- Empty all pockets — keys and phones distort jacket shape over time.
- Brush lightly with a soft clothes brush to remove surface dust.
- Allow to hang and air before storing.
- For light creases, hang in a steamy bathroom for 15 minutes.
Pressing and Cleaning
Always use a pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Use steam, not dry heat. Dry clean as infrequently as possible — every cleaning cycle shortens fabric life. Spot-clean stains immediately with a damp cloth. A well-maintained suit needs dry cleaning no more than once or twice a year.
